I got hit by a car. ..and mid-life

I wanted to start this series about walking through mid-life.

I think I’m really in it now.

I think the journey started in May of 2023.

I got hit by a car.

It sucked.

I thought I could bounce back. In fact, the officer (not the EMTs mind you) heavily influenced me to go to the hospital after I was hit. He reminded me that I was going on adrenaline. My friend Katelyn was with me. We had been newly introduced and had just had dinner for the first time. We had amazing conversation and just totally vibed. I was completely floating. As I walked back to my car swinging the bag of dinner I was bringing home for the kids I began to cross a cross walk. The care that was coming slowed down for the stop sign so I proceeded to walk forward.

I remember the moment that the grill of the car moved towards me. I remember being in denial for a moment. Of course this guy wasn’t going to roll through this stop sign!

I remember the moment when it hit me. I didn’t feel pain. I remember bouncing off the bumper and thinking this felt like jumping the trampoline at gymnastics growing up.

Then nothing.

I opened my eyes but I couldn’t move. I couldn’t move.

I saw the driver’s feet. He was wearing sandals.

He was apologizing profusely.

I had two thoughts. The first one - well Jesus would’ve been proud. “I forgive you”.

The second thought was “If you come any closer I’m going to choke the S$@! out of you.”

I think Jesus would’ve understood.

I know Jesus knows we’re human.

Some lady who thought she was being nice got me out of the road. I realize that was a stupid move. You shouldn’t move someone who had a recent head injury.

Nice but stupid.

I kind of felt like she was getting me out of the road so I wouldn’t be in the way.

Isn’t that weird.

I felt like I was in the way.

I just got hit by a damn car.

She sat me down on a nearby bench and I called my friend - who I had just met. But she’s my friend now.

She came and the EMT’s checked me out. The officer told me to go to the hospital. Katelyn who I’ve learned is very persuasive took me. I kept thinking that my kids didn’t have dinner.

I’ll continue the story tomorrow.
